Migrants in Denmark who don’t shake hands won’t receive citizenship

A new Danish bill makes it compulsory that migrants shake hands to be given official Danish citizenship, news outlet Fria Tider reports.

In the bill the migrant must sign an agreement to comply with Danish law and shake hands with the mayor of the municipality. Otherwise, that person’s citizenship will be denied.

Within Islam it is problematic for a Muslim woman to shake a man’s hand, however to become a Danish citizen migrants must participate in a ceremony in which they must shake hands with the mayor of the municipality and sign an agreement to respect Danish law.

Anyone who refuses to participate in the ceremony will not receive citizenship. But not all mayors intend to follow the new handshake rule.
