A lack of open debate has left a ‘vacuum’ to be filled by Elon Musk, says the former PA to Ann Cryer, who exposed grooming gangs.

A former aide to Ann Cryer, the MP who raised the alarm about grooming gangs in 2002, has said the “vacuum” left by politicians not talking about the attackers’ ethnicity has been filled by Elon Musk.

Mark Taylor, Cryer’s personal assistant between 2001 and 2008, said politicians then and now had failed to grasp the problem.

Cryer’s son, Lord Cryer, also praised his mother’s “bravery” in speaking out, and revealed the threats she had received as recently as five years ago.

When Cryer, now 85, challenged the police and social services, who refused to intervene, and spoke up nationally, she was branded a racist and shouted down in meetings, and Labour councillors tried to have her ejected from the party.

The police and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) only moved to tackle the scandal after a series of damning investigations by Andrew Norfolk in The Times from January 2011.
