New Gay Rights Bill

Letter to Penny Mordaunt and Baroness Susan Williams by Phelim Mcintyre, Agate Counselling and Life Coach:

I am writing to express my concerns, and horror, and the new Gay Rights Bill and its attack on human rights especially in the area concerning the right to choose therapy for unwanted homosexual feelings. There has been a deliberate campaign of misinformation from the professional bodies who have chosen, despite requests and court actions against them, to continue to misrepresent the evidence as seen in both this Bill and recent media interviews.

The United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) has been asked a number of times for evidence to support their claims that there is “overwhelming evidence” that sexual orientation change efforts are harmful. The term Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCEs) comes from a 2009 report “Appropriate Theraputic Responses to Sexual Orientation” authored by members of the American Psychological Association’s “Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity” who made up the task force for the report. Despite all the authors having been chosen because of their pro-gay stance the report states on five different occasions that there is no evidence that sexual orientation change efforts do not work or are harmful. Even though this fact has been pointed out the the UKCP, the other professional bodies and the Department of Health this report is still being used, as seen in the forthcoming Bill, in the attempt to ban sexual orientation change efforts.
