On 29 th December 2024, it was reported in The Telegraph that Labour plans a major shake-up of the national curriculum. 1 Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson apparently wants to make education ‘more diverse’, as part of which she reportedly wants to ‘decolonise’ subjects which have been branded too ‘mono-cultural’.

Included in the overhaul, she is apparently recommending that British history be rewritten so as to entrench anti-racist and decolonised approaches that will serve to subvert what are labelled ‘racial biases’. Similarly, she is reportedly calling for English literature – branded as too traditional – to be ‘improved’, replacing British writers and playwrights with more diverse authors reflective of multi-cultural Britain. What are labelled ‘majority white classrooms’ are especially singled out for attention as needing re-education, in order to ‘remove white patriarchal preferences’.

With writers such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Dickens, and many, many more, English literature is rightly recognised as of major international significance – if we so casually downgrade and apparently dismiss the status of such works, what will be the effect on our nation’s standing in the eyes of the world? And why is “diversity” being used as a mask to promote the interests of minority groups over all others?

The proposed changes are particularly disturbing, because up to now academies and independent schools have not had to follow the national curriculum, but, following the review, all state schools, including academies, will be required to teach the national curriculum.

Although dressed in the language of inclusivity and diversity, such proposals are blatantly hostile to British identity and the values on which our nation is founded. Indeed, it is hard to see the suggested changes as anything other than a deliberate attack on British society, driven by an ideological agenda that wants to overthrow our traditional values and beliefs. Such changes, if implemented, can only damage children, weaken our educational system, intensify racial division, and lessen our standing in the world.

We urge the Government to reject these ideologically driven proposals overtly aimed at restructuring society and, in the best interests of children and to promote academic excellence, to maintain the current curriculum.
