Guarding the faith in a changing world: a summary of Archbishop Glenn Davies’ final Presidential Address to the 2019 Synod of the Diocese of Sydney

By Russell Powell, Sydney Anglicans: The Archbishop also referred to moves in the Diocese of Wangaratta, as well as in Newcastle, to offer services of blessing to same-sex couples…”Friends, we have entered treacherous waters. I fear for the stability of the Anglican Church of Australia. These developments have the potential to fracture our fellowship and impair our communion……My own view is that if people wish to change the doctrine of our Church, they should start a new church or join a church more aligned to their views – but do not ruin the Anglican Church by abandoning the plain teaching of Scripture. Please leave us.”

Supportive responses:

Anger at Archbishop Glenn Davies for saying Anglicans should believe what Anglicans believeby Murray Campbell: The Anglican Archbishop of Sydney is acting with pastoral awareness of the churches and is using commonsense. If an Anglican no longer holds to Anglican beliefs and practices, they can no longer be described as Anglican in any meaningful way and so it’s a matter of integrity that one stops pretending to be so.

Finally, a Brave and Biblical Church Leaderby Bill Muehlenberg, CultureWatch:

Sure, the non-Christian is welcome to come into churches and hear the gospel being proclaimed. But church membership – like all membership – is restrictive. A member of a church is one who has forsaken sin and self and seeks to become more Christlike.

The Schismatic Archbishop, the Secular Press and the Hope of Sydneyby David Robertson, theweeflea: Is the Archbishop driving out thousands of believers?  Believers in what?  Believers in whom?   Was he not just asking that Anglican teachers uphold Anglican teaching?

I wanted bishops to leave, not LGBT people, says Sydney’s Glenn Davies, Eternity News

Dear Bishops, it’s time to show some integrityby David Ould

Anglicans have struggled to know how to respond as Australia joins the growing (but still minority) number of other countries that have legalised same-sex marriage. For our bishops this shouldn’t be difficult, at least not if they keep the promises they made…But none of those vows that they made seem to count for anything now.

Responses from the secular press:

Archbishop says Anglican Church ‘in a crisis’ over sexuality and marriage, By Michael Koziol, Sydney Morning Herald

In response the Archbishop of Melbourne Philip Freier – the country’s most senior bishop – cautioned that crisis was “a strong word”, and in a significant departure from Dr Davies’ language described same-sex marriage as a “social issue” and a matter of conscience.

The blunt words of Sydney archbishop Glenn Davies come at a critical moment for Australian churches and demands for religious freedom. By Andrew West, Guardian:

On issues of sexuality and women’s ministry, the Sydney diocese is increasingly out of step with the church in the rest of Australia and certainly in the US, Canada, New Zealand and much of the UK. But it has reached into the church’s growth areas – Africa, Asia and Latin America, known as the “global south”
