SEVENTY five years ago tomorrow – January 27, 1945 – the Soviet Red Army entered the Auschwitz concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Poland.

What is symbolised by that one word, Auschwitz, was in fact a network of more than 40 camps. Some were labour camps. Others were solely for gas chambers – as the most efficient method of murdering as many people as possible as quickly as possible. There is no exact figure for how many people were sent to Auschwitz or how many were killed there. But historians and experts estimate at least 1.3 million people were sent there, and around 1.1 million died, either murdered in gas chambers or killed through starvation, disease or forced labour. The vast majority were Jewish.

Tomorrow’s date was chosen for Holocaust Memorial Day precisely because it is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

But Auschwitz was not the only camp. In all, some six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis in a crime that was uniquely evil.

The Holocaust is not the only genocide. Stalin’s War On Ukraine, the Holodomor (the Ukrainian word for “death by hunger”) was a crime comparable with anything committed by the Nazis.

Four million Ukrainians died as a result of Stalin’s casual contempt for their lives. But as Churchill wrote: “The Final Solution is probably the greatest, most horrible crime ever committed in the whole history of the world.”

The Final Solution had only one purpose: to exterminate every Jew. It was designed to remove all trace of one people from the face of the Earth.

Other genocides have targeted groups or races for mass murder; but they were not designed to remove them in their entirety.
