The unsurprising push for polygamy

If two men can marry one another, why not three? Or why not two men and a woman? What’s so special about the number two once it’s no longer about a man and a woman coming together?

That’s the question supporters of same-sex marriage have never really been able to answer. If marriage is just about love between consenting adults, and doesn’t take into account what’s best for children, then why not recognise the love between three people, or more?

It has come as little surprise, then, to find the American Psychological Association (APA) recently setting up a special task force to “address the needs of people who practice consensual non-monogamy”, or a major U.S. TV show featuring a ‘throuple’ (a relationship of three people).

The latest development in this push for ‘poly’ relationships comes in the U.S. state of Utah, where last week the state Senate voted unanimously to decriminalise polygamy.
