There’s a gap between the Church of England and the Brexit-voting public

Broadcaster and parish priest Giles Fraser tells the Planet Normal podcast why having a largely Left and Liberal clergy is ‘a real problem’.

Giles Fraser isn’t easy to put in a box. As a Left-wing Brexiteer, he’s quick to admit he’s somewhat unique within the Church of England. Speaking to Telegraph columnist Allison Pearson on her weekly Planet Normal podcast (listen using the audio player above), the parish priest and broadcaster admits the gap between the Liberal and Left-leaning church hierarchy and the Brexit-voting public is “absolutely a real problem”. For Fraser, the 2016 referendum was “a real watershed moment” in perceiving the chasm. The risk, he tells Pearson, is that those who hold certain political views – such as Brexiteers – feel unwelcome: “That is crazy – especially given they are the majority. It’s wrong and it’s crazy.”

Also on the podcast: Horrifying events in Afghanistan leave Allison Pearson and guest co-host Tim Stanley feeling as if they’ve woken up in a dystopian nightmare. Allison hopes the evacuation process will start to prioritise women and children, Tim argues that withdrawing troops a decade earlier could have seen the very same outcome and both our presenters question President Biden’s motivations in leaving the country in the first place.
