Weddings law consultation: please respond

Dec 22, 2020 by

from The Christian Institute:

The Law Commission is consulting on changes it would like to see to weddings law in England and Wales. Its plans could seriously undermine the dignity of marriage. The consultation deadline is Monday 4 January.

Under the proposals, weddings could take place “anywhere” an officiant decided was ‘safe and dignified’. But unofficial weddings have previously been allowed underwater and in locations such as a casino. Legally binding ceremonies in such places would not reflect the seriousness of the wedding vows.

‘Prescribed words’ are to be done away with. Couples would be able to marry saying any words they choose – or none at all – as long as they express consent “orally or otherwise”.

Please respond to the consultation and encourage others to do so too. Our briefing identifies the most important questions to answer and gives you tips for what to say – but please use your own words.
