Decrying the Politics of Hate
from American College of Pediatricians:
On August 17, 2017, based on data from the discredited Southern Poverty Law Center, CNN published an article that lists the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) as a “hate group”.
The SPLC defines a “hate group” as all groups that “have beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics.”[i] Dr. Michelle Cretella, President of ACPeds states,
“The College has never maligned anyone nor has it ever engaged in attacks against a group of people. Our mission is to seek the “best for children” based on science and the medical ethics principle of “First do no harm”.
The American College of Pediatricians has position statements on topics ranging from the importance of eating together as a family to the dangers of marijuana upon the adolescent brain. The College has also presented the evidence-based position that non-heterosexual attractions and gender confusion develop from the interaction of both nature and nurture, that these feelings often change spontaneously (especially during adolescence), and that non-heterosexual lifestyles carry significant health risks. These scientific facts, and they are facts, run counter to the agenda of identity politics, and this is what the SPLC finds egregious.
In America today, inconvenient facts are not addressed through civil dialogue with an eye toward reaching common ground policies where possible. No. Instead, inconvenient facts are eliminated from discussion by demonizing the messenger.
The SPLC lists about 900 groups as “hate groups” in 2016, almost double the number published in 1999. Many of the alleged hate groups are organizations of faith including but not limited to churches. We suggest the SPLC is motivated by an anti-traditional Judeo-Christian animus and has altered its definition of hate to appeal to an increasing number of activist groups which share its ideology.
