TUESDAY LENT IVSt. Hilarion the New, 845

LITURGICAL THEME FOR THE DAY: Today we remember, Saint Hilarion took up the monastic life from his youth and lived in seclusion. Later, as Abbot of the Monastery of Pelecete in Asia Minor (believed to be in Bithynia, not far from Triglia), he suffered much from the Iconoclasts emperor Theophilus (829-842), St, Hilarion was again put under guard and beaten terribly, then they confined him on the island of Aphousia. After the death of Theophilus, the holy empress St Theodora gave orders to recall the confessors from exile. St Hilarion returned to the monastery, again agreeing to be head of the monastery.

MEDITATION OF THE DAY:  The understanding of this section of Paul’s letter to the Romans is one that holds many interpretations. At the very least Paul’s words seem to describe his Christian journey. Certainly, in lent the perspective that part of the Christian life is a daily struggle against sin. However, it would be inexact to suggest that sin is the primary dynamism for a human to accomplish living the Christian’s life. Of course, Christ is the primary factor in the Christian life, not sin; however, the quick dismissal of many in the church about sin does cause us to ponder this differently today.

At the very least this section from Romans 7 is question of how we as everyday Christians struggle in the never-ending challenges of temptation away from grace in which we hope is “to serve the law of God with the mind and heart.

PRAYER OF THE DAY: O Lord my God, who created me in Your own image and likeness, grant me this great grace, so necessary for my salvation, so that I may overcome my fallen nature which drags me down to sin and the loss of my soul.  Amen.

ANCIENT WISDOM/PRESENT GRACE: This grace is so excellent that neither the gift of prophecy, nor the working of miracles, nor even the most sublime speculation, is worth anything without it.” Thomas a Kempis, Imitation of Christ, Book II, Chapter 55.

Lenten Discipline- Make it a point to see a viewing of the Musical Amazing Grace that was on Broadway and is now on National Tour (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO4cMPz_qxU  ). In the story listen to the Song Testimony and hear again the power  and joy of Grace.
