Switzerland might be the next European country to protect marriage through its constitution

On 28 February the Swiss electorate will have the opportunity to vote on a number of popular initiatives, among them one that wants to ensure that a new clause in the country’s Federal Constitution define marriage as a union between a man and a woman and protects it against fiscal discrimination.

Currently Swiss law already defines marriage exclusively as a union between a man and a woman, albeit on the level of simple statutory law. Moreover, married couples in many cases pay higher taxes than if they were not married.

Recent opinion polls show that the initiative is very likely to be endorsed by the electorate. Very importantly, the researchers have also found out that it is supported not only by people who normally vote for conservative parties, but also by 62% of radical-liberal, 55% of socialist, and 53% of Green voters. The claim that defining marriage as it always was defined would “discriminate” someone fails to convince the Swiss.
