Same-sex marriage is a flop, numbers confirm
from Coalition for Marriage:
Only 4,850 same-sex marriages took place in 2014, the first year in which they were allowed.
The 2014 marriage figures have finally been released by the Office for National Statistics. They show that the very small number of same-sex marriages contrasts dramatically with 247,000 heterosexual marriages which took place in the same year.
Former Prime Minister David Cameron, speaking of his same-sex marriage legislation, has said “…I know it’s going to bring a lot of people a lot of pleasure for years to come” (Guardian, 26 October 2016). But the statistics reveal that not a lot of people are interested.
C4M always said there was no great demand for redefining marriage. Our May 2012 poll found that only a minority (39 per cent) of people identifying as LGB thought same-sex marriage was a priority. Now the official figures have exposed all the media fanfare and celebration as hollow bluster.
Same-sex marriages began on 29 March 2014 in England and Wales. In addition, 2,400 civil partnerships were also converted to marriages in 2014 – this first became possible in December 2014. The marriage figures for 2015 will give the first picture of a full year of same-sex marriages. These are due to be released this autumn…
