Sir Keir Starmer’s announcement that every adult in Britain will be forced to have a digital ID card should leave you with no doubt that his time is up. 

Digital ID is the sinister hobbyhorse that Labour politicians return to when they are out of ideas. It is all Tony Blair has bleated about since he was finally cast out of power in 2007.

It was Blair’s foundation, the Tony Blair Institute (TBI), that published a report called ‘Time for a Digital ID’ on Wednesday, with Starmer’s proclamation dutifully following the day after. 

The TBI was not the only think tank that pushed for this. In June, Labour Together published a report calling for a “Britcard”, using the same desperately twee language as Starmer in his official announcement.
