The Pentagon Puts on the Armor of God

The US Defense Department is getting its own Office of Religious Affairs. It will report directly to the Pentagon’s leadership and oversee religious freedom, military chaplaincy and the spiritual care of service members.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the office during a speech at Marine Corps Base Quantico. Officially, it will be open to members of all faiths. No one may be compelled to participate in religious activities, no religion may be favored and no one may be disadvantaged for having no religious belief, according to the Pentagon.

Hegseth made no secret, however, of the central place Christianity holds in his own life. “Our department is, you might say, putting on the full armor of God”, he said. The phrase comes from the Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians.

He was equally explicit about what he saw as the broader stakes. The real battle, he argued, was not only military but spiritual. “God is good. Evil is not. And America’s military must understand the difference”, he said.

A Direct Line to Pentagon Leadership

The new office will have more than an advisory role. Its director will report directly to Hegseth and the leadership of the Defense Department. “No staff filters, no bureaucratic dilution”, the secretary said. That will give military chaplains direct access to the top of the department, the Military Times reported.

Its responsibilities include religious support for service members, assistance for military families and suicide-prevention programs. The Pentagon also wants to do more to assess what it calls “spiritual fitness”, “spiritual readiness” and “spiritual resilience”. Hegseth considers these part of military readiness. Spiritual health, he argues, should not be treated as an afterthought but taken as seriously as physical and mental resilience.

He also wants to put greater emphasis on the religious role of military chaplains. They should see themselves more clearly as clergy and less as general counselors. “Live your calling. Stand firm. Preach truth. Minister to the flock”, Hegseth said at Quantico.
