Blood of Christ is safe for communion . . . by pipette or paper cup

Communion wine was not offered to congregations for safety reasons during the pandemic, but as the virus recedes, churches are being cautious in returning the sacrament to its original state.

Figures from Grace Supplies in Hull, one of the nation’s leading providers of church supplies, suggest that sales of communion wine have recovered to only 50 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

The Church of England guidance changed last summer to allow the return of the common cup, albeit with the concession that “given continued potential risks to health” it was permissible for the sacrament to continue with worshippers receiving just the bread.

Parish priests have been left to make choices for themselves and are dealing with concerns on both sides.
