Church of England campaigners demand end to bans on women priests
by Kaya Burgess, The Times:
A church in the Cornish coastal town that Dawn French, star of The Vicar of Dibley, once called home has rescinded its decision to reject female vicars, reversing what it called a “misguided and unrepresentative” move by former parish chiefs.
The church of St Fimbarrus in Fowey made headlines this year after it emerged that its governing council had issued a formal “resolution” that it would not accept female applicants to be vicar, even though the church had been without a lead priest for four years.
The parish was one of 590 in the Church of England — 4.8 per cent of the total — to formally declare that they would not accept a woman as lead cleric or accept the oversight of a female vicar, even though the church had been without a priest for four years.
