Conversion therapy ban: Government ‘committed to outlawing’ practice by Spring 2022, LGBT rights envoy says

The ban is tabled to come into effect in 2022, four years after it was first pledged.
The Government is “committed to outlawing conversion ‘therapy’ by Spring 2022,” the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy on LGBT rights has said.
Lord Herbert, appointed in May to champion LGBT equality at home and abroad, is the first Government official to firm up a time the ban will take effect.
The envoy “welcomed” the “useful and constructive” report, adding it was a matter of “how, not whether” conversion therapy is banned.
“I know the Government remains committed – as set out in the Queen’s speech – to bringing forward legislation next Spring to ensure that the abhorrent practice of conversion ‘therapy’ will be banned,” he tweeted on Friday morning.
The ban has faced a number of delays and setbacks since it was pledged by the Government in 2018.
Campaigners have accused the Government of kicking the law into the long grass after it announced a public consultation on the ban would be delayed until the end of October. The pledge was cited in May’s Queen’s Speech, but Equalities Minister Liz Truss said it would only outlaw conversion therapy following the consultation.
Concerns have been raised that the survey will give way to hardline Christian groups like the Evangelical Alliance, which personally appealed to Boris Johnson to ensure prayer and pastoral care can be given to those exploring their sexuality or gender identity.
