Gender critical feminists say the charity Humanists UK has ‘lost the plot’ over its staunch opposition to a legal change to the definition of sex and have quit the organisation in protest.

On Monday, author Joan Smith said she resigned as a patron from Humanists UK due to its position on the issue, describing herself as someone who had ‘campaigned for women’s rights all my life’.

Labour peer Baroness Dianne Hayter also stepped back from the charity as a result of a letter that she was sent by Humanists UK, which stated that a change would cause ‘confusion, enable unacceptable exclusion and unjustified discrimination’ and strip transgender people of their rights.

Parliamentarians are debating the legal nature of sex today at Westminster Hall, following a petition signed by almost 110,000 people calling for the Equality Act to be clarified so the terms ‘man’ and ‘woman’ legally mean biological sex and not ‘sex as modified by a Gender Recognition Certificate’.

It will be considered along with a rival petition which has almost 139,000 signatures and says the proposed change would ‘remove legal protections for trans people, an already marginalised group’.
