God the ‘Father’ isn’t sexist

[…] Though the Synod, back in February, gave the green light to a liturgical commission to work on gender-neutral terms for the Almighty, the truth is that it has been open season for yonks. Pity the congregant who has to endure a vicar who every Sunday crafts one of these kinds of services, which often end up sounding like those 1960s protest songs that went out with Woodstock. Calling God ‘mum’ is now almost staid compared to apologising to plants for climate change or solemnly consuming jam doughnuts in the name of period poverty. I kid you not. I am waiting for the day when a vicar passes ‘the pipe of peace’ around the pews.

Why is any of this necessary? The answer is desperation. Like much of the corporate world, the Church of England has become especially vulnerable to woke capitalism. We’ve gone the way of the world. In the upper echelons of the Church, the calculation is that there needs to be a revolution so that the unchurched masses, especially the young, will flock back. Ironically the anecdotal evidence is that the new wave of entryism is under thirty but conservative by nature. The very last thing they want is new names for the Holy Trinity, Pride flags draped over altars, bespoke services to celebrate gender transition, or as Ely Cathedral would have it, ‘raves in the nave’. It’s time for all of this to stop. The Church cannot afford to spend endless hours agonising over whether God the Father alienates some. Christianity is alienating by its nature. Get over it. Rather, Anglicans need more confidence in offering the timeless truths that have always served us well.
