If you’re into New Year’s resolutions, take some advice from Jonathan Edwards

I’m never quite sure what to make of New Year’s resolutions. It’s not that resolving to do things is a bad habit, it’s more – if you need to make changes – I’m unclear why you would wait until the 1st of January to effect them? On the other hand, I can see that it’s a good prompt for us to start asking the question: is there anything I need to change and is there anything else that I should resolve to do?

Rather than using this time of year to give up chocolate or begin a diet or whatever – fine things to do if you feel the need – perhaps we could use the opportunity to make some spiritual resolutions. Jonathan Edwards – the 18th century American theologian – famously wrote 70 resolutions. Maybe some of these things would give us some things to reflect upon and thoughts on whether there are things we, too, might resolve to do this year.
