The importance of consent is undermined if children can’t understand what they’re consenting to. That was the view of community paediatrician Dr Julie Maxwell when I caught up with her recently.

In a wide-ranging conversation, Dr Maxwell covers the medical significance of the parent-child biological connection, and growing up in a stable environment. She warns that “children accept whatever they’re taught”. So if we teach them a boy can become a girl, or a person can have two mummies, “they will believe you” even though it’s a biological lie.
