Letter to PM from Counsellors on so called “Conversion Therapy”

Sep 2, 2018 by

from Grassroots Conservatives:

Alexander and Gwen Purdie sent the enclosed letter to Theresa May recently. They await her reply. They are very experienced, retired Christian counsellors who now live in the North of England.

This lovely, thoughtful, gentle, grace-filled letter is very much needed in the public domain. The writers make extremely valid points. In particular,  this issue is very one sided and has been hijacked by the LGTB lobby,  A wide consultation is surely crucial so that all sides can be listened to and learnt from and ultimately so that individuals are not forced to participate in these sessions but may choose to do so if they wish

Dear Mrs May,

We have recently been reading in the media your opinion about ‘Conversion Therapy’ and are writing to express serious concern about what you are saying. In an interview on ITV you said you found it “abhorrent”.  In our view there are clearly two sides to this particular matter and we can assure you that many people would not even begin to agree with what you were saying.  Our deep concern is you were responding to a survey by LGBT and this seems to have coloured and formed your opinion on the matter when there are other valid opinions that need to be considered.

Indeed, many other people do have a different opinion.  We do not agree with the views of LGBT because we believe them to be inherently wrong and sadly, have too powerful an expression in our country. We would ask you to reconsider this topic from a variety of angles and consult with people who have willingly asked for help to work on their sexual orientation, having found themselves very unhappy with their own identity as either men or women.

We have worked extensively in this field and as retired Christian Counsellors never at any time forced anyone to change their ‘orientation’. What we did do was give them space to be listened to only if they referred themselves and only IF they chose to look at their particular issues. We never gave advice or told anyone how to live or behave. The term conversion therapy (wrong term in our view) was never on the agenda. We saw countless people receive incredible healing. We never offered clients conversion therapy but encouraged them to think about coming into line with how God made them. They could walk out and finish counselling at any point and we never imposed our beliefs on anyone.

In a free society people should have freedom of choice and it seems that LGBT are single handily imposing a particular view upon the nation as though there was no other valid viewpoint.  This disturbs us greatly.  They seem to have become so powerful and one must ask the question why? One answer must surely because people no longer stand up for Biblical standards and God’s morals as they once did. This has created a vacuum in people’s thinking and when there is a vacuum other things come in to fill it not all of which are necessarily correct or good.

We believe you need to be extremely careful if it is still your intention to legislate in this area. People must have the freedom of choice to explore the underlying issues that might have damaged their sexual orientation. Consider for example a young girl who is developing as she should, is sexually abused by a man and then turns away from men towards her own sex in her sexual development due to the serious damage inflicted upon her. Such a girl was not born gay but has been deeply wounded. In such instances people need to have access to healing if they so desire.

At the very least we hope that you will speak to people who have had very positive experiences of resolving sexual confusion and happily live with their new selves. A consultation must surely be essential in order that the government can hear different points of view and can make a less biased decision about such an important matter. You said the thought of ‘conversion therapy’ was abhorrent to you – you have no idea how wrong you are in apparently closing the door entirely for people dealing with their sexual confusion and we are sorry to note that you come across as though you really don’t understand the issues. Please note we are also aware of bad counselling practices and believe that counselling should only be done to the highest professional standard.

What assurances can you give us that you will investigate and consult on these very important issues? We would appreciate a response to our letter which we did not write lightly.

Yours sincerely, Alexander and Gwen Purdie
Alnick
