May CLASHES with Archbishop of Canterbury – ‘Tories ARE helping the poor’

The Church of England’s most senior cleric caused a stir earlier this month when he addressed hard left activists at the Trade Union Congress and attacked welfare reforms which have helped people back to work.

He attacked the Universal Credit brought in by the Conservatives to end the previous welfare trap which has helped thousands of people get jobs and not lose money as a result.

But speaking to journalists in New York, the Prime Minister made it clear that she did not give any extra weight to the Archbishop’s comments because of his position, saying he was just another member of the Church of England.

“The Archbishop and I sometimes disagree on things like other members of the Church of England,” she said.
