Controversial plans for same-sex couples to be blessed by the Church of England have been delayed, official papers have revealed.

In February, following an historic vote from the General Synod, the Church’s lawmaking body, blessings for lesbian gay couples who have already been married or had a civil partnership were approved.

The landmark vote angered both progressives who claim that it does not go far enough to offer full equality because the church still prohibits same-sex marriages, as well as conservatives who claim that Holy Matrimony should only be between a man and a woman.

Details regarding the final wording of the prayers and blessings, as well as pastoral guidance on whether gay priests can now have civil weddings and whether sexually active couples can be blessed, were meant to be clarified during the convening of Synod in York this weekend.

However, it has emerged that the timetable for this has been delayed due to bishops dithering over finalising the approval.
