Sheffield Cathedral choral music
Letter to the Church of England Newspaper, August 14
The recent developments around Sheffield Cathedral Choir have become a national story. May I make a positive suggestion? A crisis presents an opportunity.
Sheffield has at least three Pentecostal churches whose websites show people from BAME communities.
Might the cathedral engage with one or more of these churches and their choirs/worship groups for mutual benefit -increasing the diversity at the cathedral both in personnel and musical styles and offering professional musical education to young BAME peoples? At the same time might the current choir be reinstated as it would appear that they feel badly done to, and may even launch a court case against the Cathedral authorities?
To avoid such adverse publicity carrying on, might a swift U-turn and an approach to these other churches be a way forward?
