Woke Christianity will kill the Church of England stone dead

Drag queens are not the answer. The churches still thriving are those that refuse to pander to the Left.

The National Churches Trust reports that more than 2,000 churches have closed over the past decade, many abandoned entirely. Friends of Friendless Churches is a charity which tries to rescue and repair some in England and Wales that are no longer in use. They have more than sixty ancient, beautiful, and empty churches in their care, and they rely entirely on public donations to perform their melancholy work.

In his much loved 1954 poem Church Going, Philip Larkin wondered what would become of such churches once their original purpose had been forgotten. Perhaps they would become sites of local superstition, he suggested, roofless as well as friendless, to be let “rent-free to rain and sheep.”

Or let rent-free to drag queens? That was one canny scheme dreamt up by St James’ Church Piccadilly, which earlier this year hosted a drag queen event titled Preach! The audience were promised “lip syncs galore… hilarious comedy routines, plus dancing-in-the-aisles, singalongs, cocktails and mocktails – all under the roof of this historic Grade I listed church.” Larkin didn’t see that one coming, did he?

We are approaching one of the few days of the year on which lapsed Anglicans still show up to church. Last year 1.6 million people attended a Christmas service at an Anglican Church in England, slightly more than 2% of the population, down from 4% a decade ago. Attendance during the rest of the year is less than half this figure.

At the current rate of decline, the Church of England is expected to reach extinction in around 2060. The church is well aware of this, and one faction within it regards aggressive modernisation as its only hope for survival. Hence all the drag queens.

But they may well have it precisely backwards.

[…]  Christianity is not dying – rather, it is becoming more conservative. Congregants don’t want to be preached to about politics, and they certainly don’t want drag queens. What they want is the full-fat version of faith.
