Billy Graham preached for everyone from soldiers and farmers to presidents and even Queen Elizabeth. When the world-famous evangelist’s death was reported Wednesday, many of those luminaries praised the man they called a pastor and a friend.

Graham was a frequent visitor to the White House, and his friendships crossed partisan divides.

Former president Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, said in a statement Wednesday: “Rosalynn and I are deeply saddened to learn of the death of The Reverend Billy Graham. Tirelessly spreading a message of fellowship and hope, he shaped the spiritual lives of tens of millions of people worldwide. Broad-minded, forgiving, and humble in his treatment of others, he exemplified the life of Jesus Christ by constantly reaching out for opportunities to serve. He had an enormous influence on my own spiritual life, and I was pleased to count Reverend Graham among my advisers and friends.”

And Republican former president George H.W. Bush shared photos of Graham sitting in the White House with the Bush family, watching Bush announce the start of Operation Desert Storm in January 1991.
