Stephen Fry’s ‘God is evil’ interview shortlisted for religious award

A TV interview in which Stephen Fry described God as “utterly evil, capricious and stupid” has been shortlisted for an award that recognises excellence in religious broadcasting.

Winners of the 2016 Sandford St Martins Awards will be announced during a ceremony at Lambeth Palace in June.

Among the more conventional programmes are a documentary about Buddha, shown on BBC 4, and The Ark, telling the story of Noah.

The newly married comedian and broadcaster was asked what he would do if he found himself at the “pearly gates” after his death.

“I’ll say: bone cancer in children, what’s that about?” he said.

“How dare you. How dare you create a world in which there is such misery that’s not our fault? It’s not right. It’s utterly, utterly evil.

“Why should I respect a capricious, mean-minded, stupid God who creates a world which is so full of injustice and pain?”
