by James Tapsfield, Mailonline:
The Archbishop of Canterbury faced the wrath of Brexiteers today after he hailed the EU as ‘the greatest dream realised for human beings since the fall of the Western Roman Empire’.
Justin Welby deliver the gushing assessment in a speech in Serbia at the weekend, saying the bloc had ‘brought peace, prosperity, compassion for the poor and weak’.
While admitting that Brexit would not ‘bring about the downfall of Europe’, he suggested that the fate of Christianity was linked to the unity of the continent.
The comments came at the General Assembly of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) on Sunday.
Mr Welby said Brexit was ‘only one of a number of challenges that Europe is facing, and may well not be the most serious’.
