Saturday of Advent III – –O Emmanuel

BIBLICAL MEDITATION: The Gospel today is one we associate with an earlier time in Advent but it is in fact a theme that undergirds the entire season. We have all heard the Gospel feel as if it is targeting me personally as Saint John the Baptist is calling out the sinners to repent and mend their ways for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. He is not asking us to tinker with a few odds and ends of our lives to make a small place in the spiritual corner of our lives but rather to clean out the entire place and make him center. Simply put, it’s not enough that we change our ways that is simply a little uncomfortable. The fact is we are called to a deeper conversion for us to be ready to receive Jesus the Christ. John makes it pretty clear that we cannot take salvation for granted. We must be aware of our needs and lack as well as what we experience grace in. Advent is often a time to do an examination of conscience perhaps today would be a good day for such.

PRAYER: God of all hope and joy, open our hearts in welcome, that your Son Jesus Christ at his coming  may find in us a dwelling prepared for himself;  who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever.

Spiritual Discipline /Activity There has been much press about the COVID-19 virus. What about the Advent Virus? Be on the alert for symptoms of inner Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to this virus and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in epidemic proportions. This could pose a serious threat to what has, up to now, been a fairly stable condition of conflict in the world. Ancient Words/Present Grace: ““We have to keep asking ourselves: ‘What does it all mean? What is God trying to tell us? How are we called to live in the midst of all this?’ Without such questions our lives become numb and flat.” ― Henri J.M. Nouwen.”  –
