Marie Stopes International charity chief Simon Cooke’s £434,000 pay under scrutiny

The Charity Commission has asked Marie Stopes International, the contraception and abortion charity, why it paid its boss £434,000 last year.

Figures published in its annual report yesterday confirmed that Simon Cooke, the chief executive, was the third highest-paid charity boss after receiving a bonus that doubled his pay. The average salary of the heads of Britain’s 100 biggest charities was £178,000.

Mr Cooke’s salary rose from £173,067 to £217,250 and he was awarded a performance-related bonus of the same amount.
