Not even Reverends like me are safe from the banks’ woke purge

I politely questioned my building society’s promotion of transgender ideology. What happened next shocked me.

Nigel Farage’s difficulties with his bank are now well documented. Increasingly, many perceive that banks and corporations are overplaying their hand and becoming woke censors, closing down opinions they may not like by de-banking customers.

My own experience – a Reverend in the Church of England – supports this. It is not just famous people who are subjected to bank cancellation.

I was a satisfied customer of the Yorkshire Building Society for some 17 years. Being part Yorkshireman myself, I was brought up seeing the building society as a normal part of life. My late father had an account with them for over 25 years.

Like millions of savings account holders, I received an email from them nearly every month saying “How are we doing? We want to hear from you!”. In May one such message came through promoting the upcoming LGBTQIA+ Pride month in June, so I used this as an opportunity to offer feedback.

I wrote back two paragraphs expressing two views. One: was promoting Pride really such a good use of their time? Were there not implications for their brand?

Second: as a Minister in the Church, I expressed a strong ethical concern about the ‘T’ element of LGBT, particularly given how transgender ideology impacts children.
