PLF – What are the implications?

Dec 14, 2023 by

from Anglican Futures: (received by email)

Despite a last minute letter from the Alliance, representing a number of conservative networks, the House of Bishops voted to commend the Prayers of Love and Faith to be used in regular services (24 voted in favour, 11 against and there were 3 abstentions).  The prayers may be used in services this Sunday.

The Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, Rt Revd Paul Williams, has since written to clergy in his diocese saying that although he cannot stop clergy using them, he cannot advise it.  The Bishop of Ebbsfleet has also written to parishes who receive episcopal care from him urging them not to use the prayers.  We would be interested in receiving copies of other ‘ad clerum’ to help gain a picture of the differing positions being taken around the country.  Please email them to us.

The poor timing of this announcement has not gone unnoticed.  Most churches are focussed on sharing and celebrating the Good News of Jesus Christ’s first and second coming at this time of year – and few clergy will have time to pore over the detail of the Pastoral Guidance. So, Anglican Futures is offering a number of opportunities next week for lay people and clergy to meet online for a briefing on the main points and a discussion about the implications for orthodox parishes.

The publication of the PLF has also brought into sharp relief the different gospels that are being taught within the Church of England.  Our latest blog explores the underlying question – Is Repentance Necessary?.  I may be biased but I think it is an important read.

Is Repentance Necessary?

“Booth, Bonhoeffer, Ovey, and more recently Archbishop Samy Fawzy, Archbishop of Alexandria and Benjamin John, have all sounded the warning trumpet – but unfortunately few have been listening.”

If you are unable to make any of our formal gatherings next week, may I remind you that we are very happy to talk to you on a one-to-one basis.  Please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

And if I don’t ‘see’ you next week, may I take this opportunity to wish you a very happy Christmas, confident that whatever 2024 holds it will not come as a surprise to our Lord and Saviour.
Go before us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favour, and further us with your continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy Name, and finally, through your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Yours in Him,

Susie Leafe
