PRAYERS FOR THE UK ELECTION 2024

from St Andrew’s Dean Court, Oxford

O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come,

Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home.

Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure;

Sufficient is Thine arm alone, And our defence is sure.

Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame,

From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same.

A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone;

Short as the watch that ends the nightBefore the rising sun.

Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away;

They fly, forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day.

O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come,

Be Thou our guard while troubles last, And our eternal home.

Psalm 72 verses 1-7

Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the royal son!

2 May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice!

3 Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness!

4 May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor!

5 May they fear you while the sun endures, and as long as the moon, throughout all generations!

6 May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass, like showers that water the earth!

7 In his days may the righteous flourish, and peace abound, till the moon be no more!

OPENING PRAYERS

God of grace and truth,

Bless all who make choices in this general election. Clothe your people with gratitude for the right to choose our government, and turn that gratitude into wise choices.

Give those who vote your spirit of wisdom and understanding. Uphold all who stand for election: preserve their dignity, and guide them in the path of integrity.

Renew this nation in honouring the stranger and caring for the needy.

When all the votes are counted, show us ways to foster the flourishing of all,

and to be a blessing to our neighbours.  In the name of Christ and the power of your Spirit. Amen.

Prayer used in Parliament (adapted):

Lord, the God of righteousness and truth, grant to our King and to those shortly to be elected as Members of Parliament the guidance of your Spirit. May they never lead the nation wrongly through love of power, desire to please, or unworthy ideals but, laying aside all private interests and prejudices, keep in mind their responsibility to seek to improve the condition of all mankind; so may your kingdom come and your name be hallowed. Amen.

  • Pray for all the candidates

Heavenly Father, we pray for every candidate standing for election. Help them to be honest and transparent in their words and actions. Protect them from harm and grant them strength and resilience during this demanding time. Let your peace rest upon them and their families. May those who are elected be individuals of integrity who seek to serve with humility. Help those elected to be humble in victory and give peace for those who were unsuccessful.

Amen.

  • Give thanks, and pray for the voting

Loving Lord, we give you thanks that we live in a democracy where we have the right to vote. We pray for a good voter turnout during this election. We lift up those who will be voting for the first time; give them excitement and a serious sense of responsibility. Please protect us from hacking and malicious interfering. Amen.

  • Pray for polling stations and the process

Father God, we pray for polling stations across the UK — for safety as people turn out to vote, for strength and energy to those manning the stations and for those who will be counting the votes. Amen.

  • Lift up those who are anxious or worried in this time of uncertainty

Heavenly Father, we ask that you help us continually to fix our eyes on You. Draw close to those who are struggling, remind them of your steadfastness and fill them with your peace. Amen.

  • Pray for the new government

Father God, we lift our new government to you. We ask that you fill each member with wisdom as they represent their constituents. Equip them with the knowledge they need and help them govern with integrity and courtesy, compassion and humility. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  • A Prayer for party leaders, including our future Prime Minister

Heavenly Father, we lift up the leaders of each political party in the UK. We pray for wisdom and discernment as they make decisions that affect our nation and God’s world. Grant them integrity, compassion, and a heart for justice. Surround them with wise counsellors and give them the courage to do what is right especially for the needy and vulnerable in our society. Amen

CONCLUDING PRAYERS

Almighty God, to whom each of us must give an account for all our powers and privileges: guide the people of the United Kingdom in the election of their members of Parliament; that by wise laws and just administration, peace may be fostered, and true godliness encouraged, for the sake of Jesus our Saviour and King, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

Lord God, You have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and

thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority,

that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and

holiness.
