Editor’s note: The text of a petition presented by Exeter lay delegate Luke Appleton to this week’s meeting of the General Synod of the Church of England. He is currently seeking signatures of support from synod delegates.

To the Archbishops, Bishops, Clergy and Laity of the Church of England assembled in the General Synod

The humble petition of Luke Appleton and the undersigned,

Sheweth

That we are currently afflicted by an inconsistency between our proclaimed doctrine and lived out prayer and practice.

Your petitioners therefore most humbly pray that you will be pleased to consider the following. As Christians we are called to walk in a spirit of integrity and truth that exceeds that of the world. In our doctrine we proclaim and witness to the nation that which we perceive to be divine truth. The canons are explicitly clear that our doctrine is a result first and foremost of Scripture. Therefore we, the undersigned, call upon the General Synod to proclaim repentance of any form of prayer and practice inconsistent with Holy writ.
