The Sex-Change Society

by Melanie Phillips:

How feminism reversed sexual roles and dumped on masculinity.

In the late 1990s, I wanted to write a book about what I viewed as a dangerous upheaval in relationships between men and women. It seemed to me that the bargain between the sexes was breaking down to such an extent that sexual identity itself was in danger of being destroyed.

Having already been “cancelled” by the left for more than a decade on account of my challenges to progressive orthodoxies across the board, I couldn’t find a publisher. Eventually the Social Market Foundation, an open-minded think-tank that was sympathetic to my views, agreed to publish it. In 1999, the book duly appeared. It was entitled: The Sex-Change Society: Feminised Britain and the Neutered Male.

Shortly before it saw the light of day, however, the SMF had a change of political identity and became more left-wing. Although it was contractually bound to publish my book, it was reluctant to have anything to do with it. Accordingly, no publicity or promotion was organised and the book went out of print not long afterwards.

In recent years, certain developments — such as the emergence of “transgender”— have made The Sex-Change Society look uncannily prescient. On a couple of occasions, I’ve quoted short extracts from it on this website, and some readers have expressed frustration that they can’t obtain a copy anywhere.
