Trump Signs Bill Allowing States To Defund Planned Parenthood and Other Abortion Businesses

In the first pro-life legislation signed in 14 years, President Trump and Congress rescinded a last-minute Obama abortion funding regulation.

Obama had pushed through the regulation in the closing days of his administration to prevent states from diverting the federal “Title X” healthcare funding from Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers.

The bill repealing the Obama regulation narrowly passed the Senate on a near party line 50-50 tie vote that was broken by Vice President Mike Pence. Two Republicans, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Maine Sen. Susan Collins voted with all the Democrats in opposing this pro-life measure.

It is estimated that Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, alone could lose $60 million in funding. The intent of the bill is to allow states to redirect funding to health centers that not only do not perform abortions but that also provide much more comprehensive health care for women than Planned Parenthood currently provides.
