Kampala, Uganda – As the highly anticipated Martyrs Day approaches, preparations are in full swing in Uganda for the annual commemoration, set to take place on June 3rd. Millions of pilgrims from various corners of the globe are expected to converge on the country to pay homage and celebrate their faith.

Martyrs Day holds immense significance for the Catholics, Anglicans, and Muslims, who come together to honor the Uganda Martyrs. These brave individuals were martyred between 1885 and 1887 under the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II, the then King of Buganda, for their unwavering conversion to Christianity.

The Catholic and Anglican Shrines, located in Namugongo, have become focal points for pilgrims. The sites are abuzz with activity as devotees arrive to engage in prayers and religious rituals. The atmosphere is one of reverence and unity, as followers of different Christian denominations and the Muslim community gather to commemorate the martyrs.

Bishop Samuel George Bogere Egesa, the esteemed leader of the Eastern Cluster Church of Uganda Martyrs Day and head of Bukedi Diocese, will oversee the proceedings for this year’s celebrations. Notable dignitaries, including President Museveni, are expected to attend the event. President Museveni will participate in prayers at the Anglican church, while the Anglican Shrine will welcome Arch Bishop Foley Beach from the Anglican Church of North America, who will deliver the main sermon.
